THE KYNE

About the Kyne

Not much is known about the long-extinct peoples known as the Kyne - only that they are the progenitors of technologies like aethertech, that they play a role in the history of many mortal and aetherial creatures, and that their ruined empires are omnipresent, undying signs of what once was.

They appeared to have had a close connection with the Void, harnessing the dangerous but immensely powerful Void crystals as conduits for their inventions and machines - many of which still operate, churning deep within the bellies of their ancient labyrinths. They crafted cities of beautiful spires, carved out of whatever materials were onhand within the various pearls they inhabited - but augmented with ancient magics to never erode or decay. The intricate engravings have a distinct style, giving away the origins of anything the Kyne touched. Kyne ruins are more and more common the closer one travels to the Void, especially in the desolate, uninhabited pearls in the dark reaches of the distant aether.

They were a very iconoclastic people who disliked representing themselves in art or imagery of any kind, and they appeared to worship no gods. But it's believed that the Kyne were tall and slender beings, with smooth grey, blue, violet, and black skin, horned heads and shoulders, narrow and luminous eyes, six dexterous, clawed fingers on each hand, and long, whiplike tails.  Their bodies were engraved with glowing, intricately geometric tattoos similar to the engravings they imbued into their creations. They did not appear to have distinct males and females, and how they bore children is unknown.

The Kyne are thought to be the progenitors of the Caelha, the Ynxa, the Rukora, and the Mogi, all of whom have different lore about the Kyne and their motives. They were also believed to be responsible for teaching the primordial Zephyr how to master aethertech to accomodate for their loss of flight, and the inspiring force that motivated the Manu to rebel against the gods and establish free will.

No one knows what happened to them - only that seemingly all at once, about fifteen hundred years ago, they vanished without a trace, leaving behind everything they had worked to create. No remains or bodies have ever been uncovered.
